Baby dress fabrics & cotton lining
See what gives her dress its shape, what sits next to her skin and what to check before you order.
You can see the colour and skirt in a photo, but what’s inside the dress matters too. Here’s a look at tulle, organza, satin and cotton lining, using a few of our dresses to show how the layers work.
Tulle, organza & satin
Tulle: fine net for skirts and sleeves
Tulle is a fine net used for layered skirts, drapes and sleeves. How full the skirt looks depends on the whole dress. Compare photos where the skirt is spread out with those where it falls naturally, and check the length you’re choosing.
The Lilac Dream gown has a satin top, a net drape over the shoulders and a tulle skirt in tiers. There’s a separate cotton lining inside. Explore tulle and tutu dresses to see the different skirt shapes.
Organza: sheer layers with shape
Organza is a light, sheer fabric that can give skirts, sleeves and bows their shape. Look at the layers in your chosen dress and read what’s underneath the organza. The matching mum and daughter set below is one example.
See our organza dresses and check the fabric and lining on each dress page.
Satin: a smooth, shiny finish
Satin gives fabric a smooth, shiny surface. You might see it on the top or skirt of a dress, or find it beneath a sheer layer. Satin doesn’t always mean silk, so check the dress’s fabric details if that matters to you.
Our Amazing butterfly birthday dress has satin with handmade flowers, tulle sleeves and a 100% soft cotton lining inside.
What cotton lining means
The lining is the fabric inside the dress, next to her skin. Our dresses have a 100% soft cotton lining. The outer fabric can still be satin, tulle or organza, so read both the fabric and lining details when you compare dresses.
Inside our matching mum and daughter set
The Blush Princess Mom and Daughter Set has these layers, from the outside in:
- Organza on the outside.
- Satin beneath the organza.
- 100% soft cotton lining beneath the satin.
Both dresses are included; shoes are not. Check mum’s size and her daughter’s size separately on the dress page. Other dresses can have different layers, so check the details of the one you’re choosing.
Check how the dress will fit
Start with her age on the day she’ll wear it. Compare the chest, waist and length in the size chart with a dress that fits her well. A full skirt can look roomy while the top fits closely. Check where the hem will fall, whether you’re choosing an ankle-length gown or a below-knee dress.
See our dress size chart in inches and centimetres. For “Custom size”, follow the instructions to measure her body without adding extra room. Custom sizing is free; the price is based on the closest available chart size.
For her second birthday, compare dresses in 2–3 years. The prices on an age collection are for that size. Select another size on a product page to see its price before adding it to your cart.
A few more things to check
- What comes with it: read the “Includes” line. The Amazing butterfly birthday dress comes with detachable wings and a matching hairband. Other flower or butterfly dresses may come with different accessories.
- How to wash it: follow the care line on the dress page. For example, the Lilac Dream gown’s care line says hand wash in normal water, or dry clean. Check any advice for flowers or other decoration too.
- A closer look: look through the photos for the front, back and details you want to see. If a detail isn’t shown, ask our team about that dress. Selected dresses are available to view on a live video call.
- When it will arrive: check the delivery estimate and delivery policy before ordering. “Dispatched” means the parcel has left us; it still needs time to reach you.
